Shift of Perspective
Promoshoot and video shoot
Aeons of Ashes have completely reinvented themselves with wasteland2570. A metal band transforms into the main characters of a post-apocalyptic parallel world. Through interactive pen-and-paper role-playing, cinematic videos, puzzles, and many other interactive elements, the band takes storytelling to a whole new level.
Fans can experience the story as players and help shape it. They earn experience points, create their own game characters, and turn the world of wasteland2570 into a living universe.
Shift of Perspective
The music video
The music video for “Shift of Perspective” marks the band’s narrative transition into the “wasteland2570” universe they created.
We filmed the band’s performance scenes—both in their original black stage outfits and in their new wasteland2570 look—in a spacious, empty attic. To stylistically convey the transition into the post-apocalyptic setting, we relied on fast cuts during editing to create a flickering effect between the old stage outfits and the new wasteland2570 look. The video is rounded out with mini-clips shot by the band members themselves, as well as other player characters.
Given the location, lighting was my main challenge on this project. Fortunately, my GVM LED video lights had arrived just a few days earlier, providing us with consistent, clean light throughout the entire shoot. Although there was power available, I ran the LEDs on rechargeable batteries for testing—the result: 6 hours at 100% brightness on a single battery charge (that is, 2 batteries per LED light). I can also control the LEDs via an app, which provides more flexibility in lighting setup.
We also had three 1,000-watt theater spotlights on hand as a backup, but they ended up sitting on the sidelines.
The promoshots
We took the band photos right on the video shoot set in the attic. Here, the GVM LEDs also served us well - especially with their adjustable color range. This was very helpful for me in highlighting the individual band members with color. Of course, the colors were deliberately chosen to match their roles in wasteland2570.
And of course, we took advantage of the natural light and shot the band photos outdoors. Here, however, we also had to compensate for the height difference between me on the ground and the band on that concrete platform - we did this using a forklift and a lifting platform - which made for a pretty exciting workplace.
